Yes. When you open it up to pull the grid out to clean it unplug it from the wall socket and you can slip your hand inside where the wire is and gently clean it off with a damp paper towel. This must be done every so often and will work just like it did when it came out of the box, and will be silent again.

Does this model work well for pet dander?

I have 4 cats and I can see the difference in the air quality of my home. I didn't think it would collect as much as it did until I cleaned the "collection" plates. It works. Give it a week or two and check the collection plates, you will see what I mean. Consult the operators manual for cleaning(it is very easy). Hope this answer helps.
