No, the holes don't go all the way through.I bought this one ( and I like it) because it had magnets on both sides to use it on the side of the fridge. There seem to be a lot of other choices with mounting holes and magnets on one side, so you should probably choose a different one.

Yes. This would work perfect for that, maybe too perfect. We work in a machine shop and stick the. To the front of a large and then mount our tools to the front side. The magnet that attaches to the machine(or to your truck) is really strong so getting it off may be a chore. Probably just end up prying it off with a flat head screwdriver. These are solid magnets

Q: Would this securely hold 1 lb. when mounted behind 3/4" thick hardwood to be used in a custom magnetic knife rack? Can it be cut?

I haven't tried that but I doubt it very much. They have magneticknife racks already mounted behind wood. You can't see the metal bars.They should work ok.Good luck, Walt

Q: What is the difference between the 07576 and the 07578? Different part numbers, but I can't see any difference in the item.

I don't see a picture of 07578 so I can't say. I read each description and selected 07576 because it was the right length and color. I wanted one that was a magnet to the side of the refrigerator because I don't have the wall space to mount on the wall (except in the backsplash which I did not want to do). It's perfect for what I needed. Had one for 15 years and it got dropped and broken in a move.
