Q: What's with all the bad reviews saying it molds and doesn't work?

It does mold but works great. It's hard to clean but I put in some bleach water from time to time.

Q: Has anyone modified this so that it will work with the stopper handle attached to the faucet?

I doubt that would be possible. It would also defeat the ease of removal to clean off collected hair, etc.

Q: for the black model, is the top black too, or just the middle? The photo was not clear. I'm wanting to match oil rubbed bronze fixtures

Why do you say Black when that is the part in the sink? All your products have Chrome or nickel and who cares what color is hidden in the sink. We all want to match the top to our faucet color . This is so misleading, you should make the top piece a color that would match.
